A How-to Guide: Submitting Referenda


Referenda concurrent with an election:
This means that you notify the USG Vice-President of the referenda up to three weeks before the due date. This due date is 5 PM on the Sunday after the USG President announces elections.

  1. Email the USG Vice President. Please include the text of the referenda exactly as it will appear on the ballot and on your petition. There may be some back and forth with the Vice President to clarify the text of the referendum and ensure that the USG can affect changes should the referendum pass.
  2. Collect the signatures of 200 undergraduates. Each sheet with signatures must include the text of referenda exactly as it will appear on the ballot. Otherwise, the signatures on the sheet will not be counted.
  3. Submit the signatures to the Elections Manager the Sunday of the first week of campaigning at 5 PM.
  4. Publicize your referenda
  5. The referenda will go up for vote when the ballot for the USG election goes live.
  6. If the referendum passes, a USG representative will contact you to let you know how it will be handled.

Note: Your referendum may be brought up for review at a Senate meeting if it is thought to be frivolous. The Senate can remove it from the ballot with a 5/6 majority vote. You will be notified if the Senate is reviewing your referendum. And as recourse, if you have 1/3 of the Undergraduate student body sign a petition to get the referendum back on the ballot, it will be placed on a ballot within three weeks.

Note: Referenda affecting the Honor Code require a 3/5’s majority vote.

Referenda during the rest of the year:
This means that there is not a USG election beginning within the next three weeks.

  2. Collect the signatures of 500 undergraduates. Each sheet with signatures must include the text of referenda exactly as it will appear on the ballot. Otherwise, the signatures on the sheet will not be counted.
  3. Submit the signatures to the Elections Manager within three weeks of the time that you first notified the Vice President.
  4. Publicize your referenda
  5. The referenda will go up for vote within three weeks. We will allow some time for publicizing the special vote.
  6. If the referendum passes, a USG representative will contact you to let you know how it will be handled.
