USG Town Hall: Sexual Misconduct Policy Changes

Yesterday, after receiving important student feedback during the USG Town Hall: Sexual Misconduct Policy Changes, the USG Senate discussed, amended, and approved Senate Resolution 30-2014, which expresses Senate support for the proposed changes to University sexual misconduct policies with the following concerns (about both proposed policy and the procedures already approved by the Faculty):
(1) Requirement that an RCA report to his/her Director of Student Life a case of sexual misconduct that does not involve one of the RCA’s advisees.
(2) Equitable access—especially for individuals with varying financial resources—to outside advisers during an investigation into an alleged case of sexual misconduct.
(3) Lack of clarity regarding the role of advisers in the investigatory and adjudication process.
(4) Dual role of the three-person panel in serving both the investigatory and adjudicative role, instead of having one entity that investigates and another entity that separately hears the case and adjudicates.
The Senate also called on the Faculty-Student Committee on Sexual Misconduct (the “Nord-Minter Committee”) to investigate and propose actions to address these issues during implementation and thereafter.
Copies of this resolution will be sent to several University administrators, including President Chris Eisgruber and Vice Provost Michele Minter, the Vice Provost for Institutional Equity and Diversity and University Title IX Coordinator.
Next Monday, September 29, at 4:30 p.m. in Friend 101, the Council of the Princeton University Community (CPUC) will meet to discuss and formally vote on these proposed policy changes. All students are invited; please bring your friends and others you know for this important discussion and vote!
(As noted, the Faculty already approved changes to investigation and adjudication procedures on Monday, September 15).
