There are 5 important announcements for today:

1. 30% Discount at Labyrinth!

For the quickest service, order your books online or directly in the store today, September 8th. Visit the FAQ Section of the Dean of the College website for more information about purchasing books.

2. The Princeton Gap Year Network 

The Princeton Gap Year Network is hosting a Welcome Back Meetup for students returning from a gap year or leave of absence. This will be an informal and fun way to share advice with and meet students who have taken time off. Some friendly administrators from the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students, Counseling and Psychological Services, and other offices will be there too.

We hope you can make it. There will be lots of snacks, useful information, and great company:

• When: Tuesday, September 9th at 4:00 PM
• Where: Campus Club Dining Room

3. Activities Fair & USG Open House 

Stop by Dillon Gym on Friday, September 12th between 12 and 3 PM for the Activities Fair. More than 300 student groups will be there!

Then between 5 and 6 PM on Friday, come to the USG Open House in Frist 204 to learn more about student government. Even if you’re not sure if you want to join, stop by to say hi to USG members and enjoy free food.

4. Color Printing Now Available in Frist

Thanks to OIT, there is a color printer on the 300-level of Frist! You can print 200 sheets on this printer each academic year. See OIT’s announcement for more information.

5. YouTube Malware

Please read this announcement from OIT’s Chief Information Security Officer Ellen Amsel (CC’d):

What is happening:

There is new malware called Cryptolocker circulating that, if you’re infected, will not only encrypt your entire computer and anything to which you’re connected, but will also demand a ransom in bitcoins in order for you to decrypt your device. This nefarious malware is also known as ransomware. We’re warning you about this particular malware/ransomware because it’s been found to lurk in YouTube Ads.

 How the malware/ransomware works:

When you click on a link or thumbnail for YouTube advertisements, Cryptolocker is downloaded onto your computer and immediately tries to install itself and start encrypting your device.

What you can do:

The best way to defend against malware is to prevent it from running on your computer.  Princeton’s Information Security Office is recommending that you have 2 accounts on your laptop: one for administrator tasks, like installing software, and one for your ‘regular’ activities, like checking email and surfing the web.

Only use your administrator account when you need to install software or other activities that truly need administrator rights. At all other times use your ‘regular’ account that can’t install software. That way, when Cryptolocker or any other malware tries to install itself on your computer, it won’t be able to. Instead, you’ll get a pop-up message telling you that some software can’t install without administrator rights. That will tell you immediately that you’ve accidentally picked up the malware, but it can’t cause you harm because it can’t install itself.
